Poetry is an expression of emotions that come from the heart, thoughts that come from the mind and music that comes from the soul. Poetry flows like the rhythm of a song. It is a moment when words are spoken and enlightens others that hear it. Poetry is very energetic! Imagine being in a situation where everything you write down on paper comes to life! Amazing! Poetry is a form of art. It is filled with life and creativity! As many poems as I have written, I have never stopped to ask myself, “What is in a Poem?” or “What does this mean?-until now. But now that I think about it, I still am astonished at how poetry has its own unique way of “moving you”.

When a poet (as myself for example) reads my poetry to others, it is relaxing to me. I find that by sharing my poetry, it is a way that I can communicate to the souls of others — in a sense that they can easily relate to the words I transfer. I also believe that as I share my poetry, it is one way that I give my audience a “spark” of interest and inspiration. As a poet, when the “food for though” comes to my mind on whatever I want to write about — it is when I feel overjoyed, light as a feather and free as a bird!

Interestingly, there are several views from others on what the term “poem” means. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, it defines the term poem as “a piece of writing that usually has figurative language on separate lines that often have repeated rhythm or rhymes” (Merriam-Webster, 2021). Wow! Sounds like poetry to me! Dictionary.com is had another, but similar view which states, “a composition in verse, especially one that is characterized by a highly developed artistic form and by the use of heightened language and rhythm to express an intensely imaginative interpretation of the subject.” (Dictionary.com, 2021). As we know it, there may be hundreds of ways people around the world may have their own idea on what the term “poem” or “poetry” means to them. But there really is no right or wrong answer — Of course!

Perhaps you have been sticking with this article and may have thought to yourself, “Hmm…could I possibly be a poet “down within” and don’t know it?” Out of a possibility, you very well may be right! All it takes is just a little creativity, inspiration, and even a little meditation. These three components ( as I have found out myself) are helpful ways to start your own journey as a poet. So pick up your pen or pencil and let the brainstorming begin!

So to end this discussion for right now, I’m going to leave you with this final note.

If you ask a poet or anyone you know this question, “What is in poetry?”, what do you think he or she would tell you?

Until next time, thanks for visiting and reading. I hope you’ve been inspired!
